Dr Mat Bailey

Intensivist, Hastings Hospital, Hawke's Bay, NZ

Mat Bailey is an intensivist in Hawkes Bay.  He is a rehabillitated Australian who has been in NZ for 22 years.  Until recently, he was the Hawkes Bay DHB Clinical Lead for Information Technology and the clinical representative for Hawkes Bay DHB in the central region's  IT governance process.

ICU Information Technology tools:  What Role do they Play in our Future?

IT systems should be regarded as a clinical tool to support how we work, as well as to surface data on our practice.  As we move into the biggest ICU expansion in NZ for decades, the questions of what we need are largely informed by international comparison, response from clinicians and the pandemic.   Sadly, the data to inform decisions is significantly less granular than most of the OECD.  Future development should include a national IT system to inform future development and recognition of current needs.
