Dr Alex Browne

Nelson Hospital, NZ

Tihei Mauriora!
Ko Te Ati Awa tōku iwi
Ko Puketapu tōku hapu
Ko Alex Browne tōku ingoa

I am a Māori intensive care physician, one of only 3 who identify as such in Aotearoa. I work at Nelson Hospital which is a small regional hospital situated at the top of the South Island. I am Head of Department there. I am a member of the New Zealand committee and the Indigenous Health Committee of CICM. I will be doing work on models of care for Te Whatu Ora.

I am currently on sabbatical and I am furthering my Te Reo Māori at Te Pukenga o te Tau Ihu (Nelson Marlborough Polytech).

Equality

Dr Alex Browne (Te Ati Awa) is a Māori ICU specialist at Nelson Hospital New Zealand. Craig Carr asked him to talk about equality, but Dr Browne, while including this word in his talk, will talk about colonisation, the Treaty of Waitangi and the Acclimatisation Society as it pertains to delivering quality health care with Maori in the ICU.
