Being a Welfare Advocate

A new concept to our CICM community is the Welfare Advocate. What is a Welfare Advocate? What Would a Welfare Advocate bring to my unit? The Welfare Advocate role is proposed so that units will have an Intensivist who is able to act as a promoter, and advocate of welfare and wellbeing, as a collaborator for activities and processes that promote welfare, and as a resource for colleagues and the wider unit in approaching welfare issues. There are many ways having a Welfare Advocate may help - from how to approach a crisis or critical incident, to managing burnout in a colleague. This talk will aim to inform you about the potential in the Welfare Advocate role, and provide some guidance as to how to establish the role in your unit.

Sustaining Ourselves

Intensivists as a group are highly motivated, goal orientated, achievers. Many gravitate to our specialty because of the fast paced, varied, intensive clinical work. However, the clinical work is also busy, frequent, emotionally intensive. And after sometime, repetitive. How can we keep ourselves interested, motivated, and passionate over the span of a career? While there is no single approach, this talk will explore some of the issues and potential solutions in sustaining ourselves, using facts and literature, anecdotes, and a good dose of "what I reckon".....
