Fiona is a Clinical Nurse Specialist coordinating the care of long term patients in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at Starship Child Health. She has an extensive background in ICU and with Emergency Department experience. Fiona has a passion for working alongside patients with complex needs and has a strong interest in empowering families through education and support.
Fiona has just completed her Post Graduate Diploma in Advanced Nursing and is looking forward to starting her Masters this year. During her studies Fiona partnered with the Starship Douglas Simulation Team to develop and implement a scenario training program for families and support workers who care for children on long Term Ventilation in the community. |
Children with Complex Needs in ICU - Expectations v's Reality
As our skills, knowledge and technology advance in ICU so to do the amount of children who survive an initial acute illness but are then faced with a life that may include complexities involving chronic needs, reliance on technology and long stays in hospital. This talk will address some of the issues facing patients, their families and the health care team who care for children who have complex needs. It will discuss how expectations and reality can be very different and how as a health care team communication can be a powerful tool to help alleviate some of the challenges that we all face when looking after this population of patients.
